It’s never been easier—or harder—to get someone’s attention.

Easier because, with a smartphone in so many pockets, you can reach anyone at any time. Harder because everyone else is trying to do the same. The inbox is crowded. The feed never ends. Notifications pull us in every direction.

Welcome to the attention economy, where attention isn’t just a resource—it IS the resource. Let’s talk about it.

Attention is a commodity

Attention is the scarcest commodity of our time. People have only so much of it, and it’s constantly under attack. Ads, apps, emails, cat videos, even this newsletter—they all compete for a slice of someone’s precious focus.

And here’s the kicker: you don’t own your audience’s attention. You borrow it. Earn it. Nurture it. You build trust. Abuse it, and it’s gone.

What Does This Mean for No-Budget Marketers?

If you don’t have money to burn, you can’t afford to waste attention. Every email you send, every ad you post, every piece of content you create has to earn its keep.

Here’s how:

1. Be Specific: Don’t try to talk to everyone. Talk to someone. Write your next email as if you’re speaking directly to a single person in your audience. What’s their problem? What do they need? Answer that. We talked about this in last week’s newsletter.

2. Be Worthwhile: Respect their time. Give them something valuable—a tip, a laugh, a reason to click. If it’s just noise, they’ll tune out.

3. Be Consistent: Attention isn’t captured with a single post or email. It’s earned over time. Show up regularly, show up authentically, and people will start to listen.

When you’re crafting your next marketing piece, ask yourself:

  • Does this respect my audience’s attention?

  • Does it create value for them, not just me?

  • Will they miss it if I stop?

If the answer isn’t a clear “yes,” it’s time to rethink.

Small Example, Big Lesson

Take a look at this newsletter. I’m not here to sell you a course or make you click through 15 pop-ups. My goal is simple: give you one good idea you can use today. If I can do that, I hope I’ve earned your attention. If I do that over and over, I hope to earn your trust.

What’s your version of that?

Think about the last thing you sent to your audience. Was it worth their attention? If not, how can you make it better next time?

Let me know how it goes.
